Estimates vary but what we can be sure of is that there is a very substantial number of people operating as independent Management consultants in the UK.

In recent years, changes in employment in industry have certainly contributed to the number of very experienced senior managers, still a lifetime away from retirement but who find themselves unable to secure a full time post and so they turn to considering whether or not they should embark on setting up their own business as an independent Management consultant.

The question is why not? That 20 / 25 Years of hard frontline business experience is certainly valuable and could even be so valuable that other companies will be willing to pay a reasonable fee in order to benefit from it.
